NOP Aquatic Plant Extracts Policy
(April 2, 2014) On March 12, 2014, the National Organic Program (NOP) released Policy Memo 14-1 regarding the use of phosphoric acid in aquatic plant extracts. Specifically, the NOP will no longer allow phosphoric acid as a pH adjuster in alkali-extracted aquatic plants. The new policy memo gives a "phase out" period of one year to use any remaining products containing phosphoric acid. After March 12, 2015, phosphoric acid will be prohibited for use in aquatic plant extracts.
OMRI has never permitted the use of phosphoric acid in alkali-extracted plant products. Therefore, OMRI Listed® products will not be affected by this policy change.
Please contact Lindsay Fernandez-Salvador, OMRI Technical Director, for more information regarding this change.
