Update
USDA permits sucrose octanoate esters for organic crop and livestock agriculture, clarifies chitosan allowed as adjuvant
December 17 , 2007
The USDA’s National Organic Program
released a final rule in the Federal Register amending the National Organic Program Rule. The Federal Register Notice formally allows the use of the synthetic compound sucrose octanoate esters as an insecticide in both organic crop and livestock production.
The NOP elected not to add chitosan to the National List as an adjuvant. Its use already permitted at § 205.601(m) of the National List, because it is classified as a List 4B inert ingredient.
According to the OMRI Policy Manual, OMRI
standards are immediately updated when there is a change to the
National Organic Program rule. The release of this final rule
immediately changes OMRI's standards. OMRI will
publish an addendum to the OMRI Standards Manual and the OMRI Generic
Materials
List during their next regularly published update.
